Protection of Personal Information Act
Are you ready?
POPIA commenced on 1 July 2020 and there is a 1 year grace period which ends on 30 June 2021. From 1 July 2021, POPIA’s provisions and penalties will be fully effective and enforceable. If your organisation requests, collects, stores, deletes, uses or otherwise processes personal information you will need to comply with POPIA.
The POPIpack includes a generic set of legal data protection documents which, considering the sector your organisation may be regulated by, aims to deliver a POPIA compliance kick-start for the organisation.
It’s the law – Assists you and your business to comply and remain compliant.
Be proactive rather than reactive – avoid detrimental penalties and reputational damage caused by data breaches.
Privacy by Design – develop and implement a bespoke suite of legal data protection documents and IT systems & tools that are tailored to suit your business practices.
Keeping up with the times – Data protection is unavoidable in today’s business world which is fueled by technology. Complying with data protection laws is not only compulsory but can also create greater efficiency and increased output.
Promotion of an in-house data protection culture – Nurturing a culture of compliance within your organisation.
Customer Trust – instill and affirm trust with your existing and/or future customers who know that you will protect their personal data and respect their right to privacy.
No matter where your organisation is on your data protection or POPIA compliance journey and if you are feeling confused about where to start, we recommend that you look at our Services page to see how we can help you.

PR De Wet
As the brainchild behind the POPIpack, P.R. foresaw that compliance with POPIA, and data protection and security in general, would become a major part of public and private entities’ operations in South Africa and that the POPIpack, as a ‘kick-start’ solution for all SMEs to address their data protection compliance obligations and whose resources and finances are traditionally limited to the most pressing corners of the business, may just be the start of something bigger – the providing of a full suite of data protection and compliance services to entities no matter the size and structure.
Presently a director and partner at VDT Attorneys, P.R.’s expertise, mentorship and experience goes far beyond data protection and compliance services, with his key areas of legal specialisation and practice covering the fields of corporate securities and company law, tax and competition law. P.R. has advised several clients on high-stake complex corporate restructures and transactions and along with each, the address of compliance considerations.
In his spare time P.R. enjoys spending quality time with his family and friends, playing golf, listening to and sometimes making music.

Hayley’s practice areas center round data governance and data protection, compliance management and corporate and commercial secretariat work. Her experience and knowledge extends further to the legal fields of research, procurement, legalisation services and intellectual property.
Currently Hayley practices as an associate in VDT Attorney’s commercial and tax division, with the majority of her time being spent presenting on topics of data protection governance and planning, developing and implementing data protection and legal compliance agreements and solutions for clients; helping them cut through and address the so-called traditional ‘boring’ compliance red tape. Compliance can be fun right? She thinks so.
In her spare time, Hayley has a keen interest in keeping active (talk to her about running, she will like you immediately and yes, she is crazy), enjoys reading and spending time outdoors with friends and family. Did someone say braai?
